Tip depends on the type of iron and the technician, for a smaller JBC type iron a Hooked tip is very multi functional in the right hands,
For larger irons a chisel is most versatile , as you can always use a single corner of it to head things.
Biggest mistake i notice in new technicians is that they dont heat the the pad (and the barrel) long enough, while also heating the leg,. if you PCB is of a good quality, heating both (easy with a hook or angled chisel) and then slowly applying the solder gives you a nice IPC3 barrel fill and also means you dont end up with the convex solder joint, and get a nicely slopped one.
and if ever in any doubt, or its not wicking right, use a dab of flux and it should pull it in nicely.
Ive had a conical tip that and a flat angle on it that was the best of both worlds.
Buy a D16, a D24 a 2MM hoof at 45 or 60 degrees for small drag soldering and a hollow tip (cup) 3MM for the larger ones. A large-ish knife is handy. If you really want a conical tip don’t go too sharp or too long. The tips of the really pointy ones get cold too fast and can break. Also , it’s 2023, don’t buy 936 style soldering irons, get a cheap T12 as a beginner. Don’t go for big brands. I recommend at the low end a KSGER. Keywords: KSGER STM32 V3.1S T12 (I just checked and apparently it’s on sale for 40$) Mid range an AiXun T3A is fantastic, at 200 watt you’ll burn the tips of your fingers off as a beginner though, it’s available with T12 or the more expensive T245 tips.
