Over the last few years, while building out my smart home automations, I’ve come across various different types of trigger to invoke fun automations. Here’s a handful of triggers that aren’t really obvious – hopefully they can give you some ideas to work in to your smart home! Enjoy!

I use power draw to detect fridge compressor running cycle. If running cycle is higher than normal (or average power draw more than usual), it probably means the door is not closed quite well and alarms me. (and just for safety, also if power draw is below normal ie. fridge not running).
I also use power to detect when my washing machine/dishwasher has started running. When it stops running, one of my lights turn to green to remind me to close water valve and take washed clothes out. Reminder is cancelled by a remote button on my washer so I have to be there. No cheating elsewhere thinking I’ll do it in a moment.. (vibration sensors would be another simple way to detect those)
I’ve got co2 and humidity sensors that triggers a smart relais that turns our (dumb) airfilter system into mode 1, 2 or 3. I want to do a contact sensor on my washing machine and a smart plug so when it’s done I get a notification. When I ignore that notification and the contact sensor is not triggered I get another notification (over and over until I get crazy with the notifications) 😂
