A second router might also be needed because of the current limitations of routers. Despite the fact that there are 250 IP address in your home network IP range, most routers will only handle 20-30 ‘active’ devices and when you start adding up all the devices that have their own IP… smart switches, TVs, phones, tablets, casting devices, light bulbs, you can very easily exceed the amount the router supports especially in large household. I live by myself and have over 50 devices so I use two routers. YES, you can assign all 250 addresses (Personally I use DHCP reservations, this way devices like a NAS will always have the same IP) but you may notice that random devices will be slow to respond at times and may have to say “Alexa, turn on kitchen lights” several times before they all respond.
How about an open source platform that does not connect to the internet such as home assistant?
